I mean, I'd record a video, but it just shows the tracks not moving. Tested in Ardour 8 release, too. Same issue.

What's your environment? Linux, ubuntu, gnome like I reported?

one possibility is that you are in internal edit mode; ctrl-up/down have different bindings there (for editing MIDI)

Yes, this seems to be the case. When in edit mode, ctrl+up/down does not work. I'm sure you've thought of and considered options for this, but, obviously, this seems suboptimal. A hotkey combination should work through all modes, right? Or at least give a warning/error of some type? As is, the interface says a key combination will work that doesn't work and the user is left wondering why.

Actually, we decided long ago that as a general rule, key bindings/shortcuts could not be universal. Obviously there is a set that needs to be (most clearly, those for cut/copy/paste.

But a DAW uses so many shortcuts that there are just not enough to go around, and we felt (and still feel) comfortable with some of them being repurposed when in particular modes. That's a fundamental element of a mode-driven editor; even mode-driven text editors have to deal with this same issue (and do the same thing we have done).

We need to improve the docs to make it clear to people that key bindings are heirarchical, and may be re-used/re-purposed in certain modes.
