Summary0009617: Master bus automatically connects to too many outputs
DescriptionWhen using the monitor section, the master bus should send its output there. It usually does this by default, but occasionally, Ardour will misbehave: the master's output button will display '*4*'. Upon inspection, it appears to have been connected to both the monitor bus and physical outputs. The sound will often be twice as loud when this happens.

This routing problem can be easily fixed by manually setting the master output to 'monitor in'. However, this solution does not persist. Whenever a track is added, the master output automatically reverts to '*4*'. Switching the auto-connect options in the Signal Flow section in Preferences does not appear to change this behaviour.

JACK

Could it be that the connection is made by some jack connection manager?
JACK as in jackd, or pipewire? There have been some reports that pipewire causes accidental additional connections.

Can you test if the issue also happens if you do not use JACK, but Ardour's ALSA backend?

Ah, you are correct. It was indeed not Ardour, but another program messing with the jack connections. Fairly obvious, in retrospect, but thank you for pointing me to a solution.

Not a bug.
