Similar, possibly identical problem for me. Seg Faults on "starting audio engine" (even when JACK is running. 10.6.1, JACKOSX 0.84. Check out the interesting console log (fatal error - failed to find fader_belt.png) |

try deleting ~/.fontconfig/ that did it for me. |

Did you try removing your ~/.fontconfig/ directory? |
