Summary | 0008728: "Region color follows track color" doesn't work properly in one specific scenario
Description | When "Region color follows track color" is disabled and at the same time "Use name highlight bars in region displays" (both settings are in Preferences > Appearance > Editor) is enabled, region color still follows track color upon e.g. opening a session. The setting is only correctly respected after selecting and deselecting all regions at least once.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Make sure Preferences > Appearance > Editor > Region color follows track color is unticked. 2. Make sure Preferences > Appearance > Editor > Use name highlight bars in region displays (requires a restart) is ticked. 3. Open a session. 4. Watch region color still following track color despite the option being disabled. 5. Go to Edit > Select > Select All Objects. 6. Go to Edit > Select > Deselect All. 7. Watch region color not following track color anymore (and thus being displayed correctly).
Additional Information | This is not a new bug in Ardour 6.7. I just didn't have the time to report this earlier (and granted, it wasn't that important to me). It's hard to remember, but I think I first saw this in Ardour 6.0, This version introduced some kind of new color rendering resulting in very poor contrast between the region waveform and the region background, a problem that I reported here: https://discourse.ardour.org/t/waveform-color-in-ardour-6/103695. Ever since this UI change where the waveforms would get tinted despite their color being set to plain white in the theme settings, I use Ardour with "Region color follows track color" disabled because this basically fixed the problem. The name highlight bars are actually very useful because with these, the region name never covers up the waveform. But, as described above, it results in the odd behavior of region color suddely reappearing before selecting anything. I don't know whether this bug is macOS exclusive or whether it can be reproduced under Windows and/or Linux as well.

As an additional observation: You don't have to select all regions at once to make the region color disappear. You can also select and deselect individual regions. In this case, only the regions that got selected at least once are correctly rendered whereas the other ones don't. |
