tested here with 5.0 on Linux - no issue with the splash screen.

On Mac OS X, "Ardour 5.5.0 "The Plateaux of Mirror" (rev 5.5) Intel 64-bit", I have the same problem.

-Open session during startup. Splash screen closes saying "Ardour is ready to use" or something like that.
-Use menu Session>Open, to open another session. Splash screen remains stuck at "Reload session history". No way to close it, no way to move it out of the way.

I'm on dual monitors, by the way.

Found a workaround by opening Window>Audio/Midi Setup. That seems to "grab" the splash screen and turn it into the audio/midi dialog pane which can be closed.

On Ubuntu 14.04 (Unity), 5.5-750-g62995bd, when a change is made to a session, then a switch to a snapshot, the splash screen stays open after the save/discard window is closed. Though clicking anywhere on Ardour's window closes it.
When no change has been made, the splash screen doesn't appear at all (or briefly enough that I can't see it).

Splash screen is also not closing by switching between snapshots on ubuntu 16.4 with Ardour 5.6. Click on the titelbar of the editor window brings the splash in the background.

I can also reproduce this on Fedora 24 with official 5.6 version.

It took some time to work out how to consitantly reproduce it. If I open a Session via Session -> Recent... and then open a Session via Session -> Open... it seems the splash screen will stay present.

I suspect that session-sample rates also play a role.

If you open a session with the same SR, the engine dialog won't be displayed. The engine dialog triggers the splash.

PS. I cannot reproduce this with the given recipe.

Opening the a session, opening the same Seesion via Session > Recent and opening the same session again via Session > Open.. the splash is hidden.

I also tried to load-recent and open 44.1k and 48K session, where the engine dialog shows up and can't reproduce. There must be more to this :(

Another way to reproduce this for me:

1. Load a Session via the recent Session window
2. Modify the Session
3. Load another Snapshot via the Snapshot tab in the Editor List pane.

This is confirmed for me too (Linux, Ardour 5.8).
1. open a session
2. switch to another session (session>open)

--> splash screen stays on top of windows.

Workaround:
Move splash screen to another workspace.

I have a similar situation. I can close splash screen after switching to a different snapshot, but it keeps on poppin' up whenever I insert a plugin on a track.

Open session/snapshot -> add a plugin (OK!) -> switch to a different snapshot -> insert a plugin -> splash screen pops up

I made a short screencast, you can find it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7WEJ_b69MObVDVIakdjOXdHZWs/view?usp=sharing

Ubuntu Studio 16.04 with Gnome.

Hey Paul, sorry I forgot. It's with 5.9, but it used to do it even with 5.8

In a short test with 5.12.0 with ubuntu 16.4, it seems, that the bug is gone. The splash is correctly closed after switching between snapshots.
