Summary0006671: Video overlay for visual cues
DescriptionThere are currently only a few companies offering it. Strea*COUGH*mers(Figure*COUGH*53), Edi*COUGH*Cue(Soundin*COUGH*sync), and DP.
Nevertheless, many larger recording sessions for film and players of live film music concerts make use of it.

For Ardour the Idea would be to somehow have visual cues integrated into the video, the video timeline and be linked to the tempo map. You could overlay:

1. semi transparent evolving shapes: moving beams, expanding circles, filling forms etc.
2. set a small visual click dot in a corner for count ins, or the entire cue. (Sometimes it is better to see a click on screen to avoid earphone leakage... .)
Additional InformationWhen recording music live for film, one currently has two options in most DAWS:

Give the Player a click track, or cut the film to the music in postproduction.
First is best in music with a rhythm group, e.g. drums, where the tempo is fixed to a more or less constant speed (this also includes things like half- and double-time). Second is only possible, if the director explicitly wants to cut the film to the music, which happens very seldom, except maybe for music videos.

For more experimental and classical music, which lives by rubatos accelerandos, ritardandos, or is entirely free of any measure, a click track is problematic, because you cannot predict the speed in advance. It often happens that musicians stop making music, because they are trying hard to keep in sync. Even with a conductor the changes in speed often translate much too slow to the musicians. While the conductor often has to be in front the orchestra time wise and predict where the ride is going, it would be much easier to have visual cues that prepare cue changes, or cuts in a film.
One could argue to do it old school by looking at the time code, but its more work to calculate ahead of time while conducting. Also a time code distracts you from everything shown above it, and is another thing that has to be remembered, while focusing on the music.

The time-consuming part of implementing this is coming up with a GUI to configure the visual cues.
A basic version could re-use markers: e.g a special-cased text in a marker triggers visual cue.

meanwhile http://www.ebay.com/bhp/conductor-baton starting at $3.99 will do a much better job :-)

its more about preparing changes in the music for the guy holding the baton. if you have been going for 2min of music with tempo changes and e.g. TC 01:26:13:02 and TC 01:26:59:34 have to be hit, it would help to have visual cues in advance to guide you towards it.
it saves time and structures the tempo flow more naturally, while still abiding to every frame, as a click would do. And it is also clearer for a conductor, who is not the composer.

maybe one could use a kind of region style. A region system would have a start and an end, which one could stretch and shrink depending on how gradually a form should evolve or move.

yeah I was half joking regarding the baton, hence the smiley.

A region-style track is exactly what I was worried about, that's at least a week's worth of full-time work, probably more, and unlikely to happen in the near future. A visual cue will have to be maintained on both ends: preview in the timeline, display in the player.

Still, I like the idea: cue-region start/end. Also since regions can be stacked this will allow to multiple simultaneous cues.

There's also the idea of general purpose meta-data tracks floating around which will tie in with this issue.
