Summary | 0006645: Window size cannot be decreased
Description | I cannot decrease the horizontal window size so it's not possible to fit the whole window onto my screen (screen resolution is 1600x900). In maximised state the window geometry is 1783x863, and neither the left nor the right part are visible (I guess KDE centers the window but it cannot adapt the x dimension). Interestingly, in 4.0.0 I did not have this problem – the window size was well-behaved and apart from the Nudge Clock, everything fitted onto the screen when the window was maximised. It seems that in 4.4, the main buttons (play, record etc.) are wider (and the symbols larger). To save screen estate, it would be a good thing if the buttons could be smaller (probably resize to a certain extent). Also, the combo boxes for Zoom Focus, Snap/Grid Mode, Snap/Grid Units and Edit point could be a bit less wide to make the Nudge Clock fit.
Additional Information | Using Linux (openSUSE 13.2, KDE 4), self-compiled from source.

Ardour 4.4. fits nicely on my 1024x768 laptop screen (with Font-scaling = 0000088:0000085%). Although for narrow screens (< 1200px wide) Ardour does re-arrange the layout (hide the 2nd clock, move the nudge-clock up). you can force enable this by setting the ARDOUR_NARROW_SCREEN environment variable: export ARDOUR_NARROW_SCREEN=1 Ardour4 Also check Preferences > GUI > Scaling. A screenshot would be nice, too. I know it works for others on 1600x900 screens, but it does depend on the default desktop font and font-size (which sets the baseline). |

Thanks for the tip with the environment variable – that makes it usable! Still, I cannot see far right content of the toolbar right above the tracks/waveforms. Edit: I forgot to mention I rely on rather large fonts (but I couldn't find the numeric value I use for the GUI/font scaling, I just fiddled with the slider until the fonts were easily legible). |

The GUI scales so that all possible text will fit. Also since version 4.1 buttons are no longer pixel-size fixed but scale with the font-size in order to accommodate High-DPI screens. If you rely on huge fonts, it's tricky to shrink... I don't know a good solution right now. You can detach the toolbars (click the small gray hook to the right of each group), maybe that can help. |
|
OK, detaching helps although it is not an ideal solution, IMO. Is it possible to rearrange the individual toolbars somehow? It would help if the width of the combo boxes I mentioned could be limited in such a way that they can just accommodate the widest item in the list and not 'waste' that space. Is there any chance of getting such a change in? |
|
No, the toolbars are not individually rearrangeable or configurable. The combo boxes should be sized to fit the widest item already. If they are not, that's a relatively straightforward bug. |
|
Unfortunately, they're not sized to the widest item (see screenshot). Probably I could make a better one showing that the other items are not as wide as the ones displayed, but I think you know the other items and their approximate width. |
