Summary | 0006363: Clipping indicators on waveforms are usually missing
Description | In Ardour 3, clipping indicators on waveforms in regions were very conspicuous, at any zoom level. I could, for example, open properties on a region containing recorded audio, and with entire region visible in the editor (any length, possibly hours), increase the gain step by step until I saw red clip indicator(s) appear somewhere, then back off slightly. In Ardour 4, with "Show waveform clipping" option enabled, I almost never see clip indicators, at any zoom level. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong... Every once in a while I do see them; I haven't figured out what causes them to be displayed when they are. I was excited to discover the Waveform Clip Level setting (at least I don't remember seeing it in A3), but unfortunately adjusting it from 0 to anything lower didn't cause any change in behavior. I expected to see more and more red areas (at a given region gain setting) with lower clip levels. Also, in the Preferences window, is there a reason that the "Show waveform clipping" option is under the "Theme" tab, while the "Waveform Clip Level" is under "Editor"? Wouldn't it make more sense to put both of these next to each other in the Editor tab -- or am I misunderstanding what they control? Tested on 4.0.0, 4.0.312, 4.0.420; Fedora 21, KDE running in VNC session (so no HW graphics acceleration).
